On Friends

photo(98)

Last night I had to say goodbye to a friend. I'm so incredibly happy for her because she is starting a new job in southern California very soon. I love her for taking a break up with a long term boyfriend and turning it into something positive: realizing that it was time for a life change. She could have easily moped around and played the poor me stance, but she didn't. She cut ties, moved all her stuff into a friend's basement and has been sleeping on an air mattress and searching for new jobs for the last few months. She never looked back. Her strength was empowering. It was so refreshing to witness her actions when we live in a world full of people who rarely leave their comfort zone.

Our friendship is fairly new, but I'm a strong believer in the idea that people come in to your life for a reason, no matter how long or short they stick around in it. Her and I met through mutual friends shortly after KC and I broke up and the weekend after she broke up with her boyfriend. We instantly connected. We were able to talk about life, boys and just be humorous with each other. I never once felt judgement from her on anything I talked to her about. We cheered each other on when scoping for guys, laughed at stupid things we would say, and texted back and forth following up on one another's day. We were able to lean on each other during a time when our hearts were healing (Probably more so mine than hers!) and find comfort in that. She is definitely one of those friends that you don't meet every day, and when you do, you feel so blessed to have crossed paths. Our friendship may be young, but it's just beginning. I look forward to hearing about how her new path is going, and planning trips down to see her. Distance sucks, but I've learned that it's not all that bad. You just pick up where you last left off, and I've noticed that I prefer these friendships the best.

One of Those Weekends

IMG_3990

The best kind of friendships, and the only ones I choose to have, are the ones where you might not see the person all the time but when you do, you pick up right where you left off. The way I look at it is this: the older one gets, the busier life becomes. Too many hours are spent at work, social calendars become filled all too quickly, life moves us to new places-some near, some far, and twenty four hours in one day just doesn't seem to cut it as an adult. As they say "Life is too short", and whoever said this is beyond correct. Instead of focusing on the lack of time spent with a person, the time you do spend with that person should be focused on. Life is just too short to get upset about not talking to someone enough-especially when it's due to forces beyond either persons' control.

This weekend I went back home. I spent a good part of my time wondering about the last time I went back home. It had been awhile. Although I grew up there I don't feel the connection like I used to feel. Somewhere in the last few years I outgrew my hometown. I think this feeling has stopped me from wanting to return to it as often as I used to. Even though I feel this way, I still have some amazing friends and family that live in that town and I am filled with so much joy that we maintain such good relationships despite the fact that I have moved away. This weekend reminded and rekindled that warm feeling I get when I hang out with old friends and realize how fortunate I am to have great people in my life-no matter how often or not I see them.

I caught up with an old friend for lunch
Grabbed sushi, talked photography and saw Catching Fire with my Dad
Drank hot cider while watching friends decorate their tree
Laughed and ate scones with girlfriends this morning
Met baby Diego while eating guac and Modelos

My heart is full this Sunday evening.

Life Lessons: Friendships

There sometimes comes a point in a friendship when you have to turn, walk away and head for the door. You realize you can only extend the olive branch so many times, and give so much of yourself when you see the act is not reciprocated. Friendship is a two way street. Life is too short to waste your time on people who don't understand this. Be thankful for those friends who do understand, and appreciate this. Those are your true friends.

I have too much going on these days to put my worry into someone who doesn't appreciate me or value the friendship. I feel that most of my friendships are easy going, and operate with little to no effort. That sounds wrong, but it isn't. It's almost like an unspoken agreement I have with my friends. We all know that life is crazy, and we become busier with every year we grow older. Because of this we don't always talk. Sometimes we go months without having a phone conversation. However, when we do see each other we pick up right where we left off, as if no time had passed between the last time we saw each other. I love that I have this situation with all my closest friends. We have that mutual respect and appreciation for each others lives. I feel like at 25 years old I'm done with the stupid games, and immaturity, but life continues to be a constant weeding out process when it comes to friends. Although it has significantly slowed since my teen years, I have to remind myself that it still continues at any age. Some people are just not meant to be in your life story til the end, and that's OK. That's life.
